There is certain overhead that goes with having a business.  Depending on what you do, the overhead is different.  However, one universal cost of doing business is a necessary effort to be visible on the Internet.  If you don’t do something to make your web site relevant to search engines, then you will not show up in searches.  And, if you are really not paying attention, your site may not even be indexed.

Generally, I tell clients Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the cost of doing business on the Internet.  SEO is a broad service and can be performed in many way.  Most hardcore SEO companies will tell you that you have to do everything out there to be competitive.  And, from a technical point of view, that is true because you are not leaving any stones unturned.  However, it is very possible to get results with a steady focused, smart effort effort that does not include everything and the kitchen sink.  Following this all-in line of thinking has a lot of small business people paying large bills of thousands of dollars per month for nebulous efforts that rarely meet the client’s expectations.   Clients usually quit the effort and are perplexed over what else they can do.
