Over the weekend, I gave a marketing presentation at the AACS CME course in Tulsa hosted by Drs. Angelo Cuzalina and James Koehler.  It is always great to see my friends in Tulsa but this time there was an added jolt.  My presentation was on the impact of the social media experience on the use of the Internet and I called it Digital Influence: Using The Internet Better Than Your Competitors.  The talk explained how user-generated content was growing rapidly on the Internet and what that mean for cosmetic surgeons.  Well, when the topic quickly moved to online reviews, I knew I hit a nerve.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll break down the main points of that presentation here in my blog but for now, suffice it to say, I think everyone is being touched by review issues online.  I have heard three main issues emerge: 1) I have a negative review that is hurting me, 2) I have no reviews at all and I look invisible compared to my competitors and 3) I have a few reviews but none of them are enthusiastic or sparkling.   Yes, these are all problems.

In my presentation, I explained the Social Media Ripple Effect.  With the widespread use of social mediums, people are becoming more socialized to the idea of writing and gathering opinions online.  This content, which is written by an Internet user is generally referred to as User-Generated Content.  This varies greatly from the content you find on your web site.  On your web site, the content is what you want people to see and know about you.  This is analogous to an ad or brochure.  User generated content is not under your control and is like word-of-mouth.  As User-Generated Content is beginning to dominate the web, posts such as reviews are receiving a de facto assumption of truth and validity.  In other words, people are believing and being more influenced by reviews they read than the carefully worded marketing writing you are presenting on your site.  Statistics show that most people are influenced in their purchases by online reviews while they are shopping on the web.

So, if you do not have a strategy to manage and promote positive reviews online, you have a gaping hole in your Internet strategy.  Dog Star Media’s Online Review Manager Program addresses this and other issues related to reviews.  In the coming weeks, I will continue to break down my Tulsa presentation but for now, I suggest you ask yourself if you even have this base covered.  Our Online Review Manager program is affordable and offers great value in this area.  If you want to talk about how to improve your online review situation, please email me at donald@dogstarmedia.com.
