Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is one of the most misunderstood elements of a online marketing. There are several elements and best practices related to SEO and, in my experience, the biggest obstacle to successful SEO is communication.
As SEO can’t be fully explained in a blog of any reasonable length, here is one point that is frequently misunderstood by clients. SEO reports focus that focus on keywords are doing just that: focusing on keywords. Let’s say a client wants us to focus on 10 specific keywords, such as “cosmetic dentistry Dallas.” The reports will show data related to the web site and those terms. However, the report focuses on the 10 keywords being measured. It does not measure all the keywords for which the site is relevant.
So, a confusing dynamic is often generated. If communication is poor, it is not uncommon for the client to think those are the ONLY keywords relevant to the web site. So you can see how disappointment and disillusionment can set in if this point is not understood. Reporting only accounts for the details in the report.
This is why our program focuses on what matters: site visitors and incoming calls. Our goal overall is to increase site traffic and with increasing volume, stimulate a higher call to action. Clients in our SEO program are focused on increasing traffic. They should know that we may change keywords, their terms on their reports might change and cause certain metrics to fluxuate but at the end of the day, their overall relevance is higher, accounting for more traffic, which is where the chance for a relationship begins.
